Well, my wife and I were looking through places to rent once our current lease expires and we of course went to craigslist.org. While searching craigslist, we found one place that looked and sounded amazing. It's title was: "$385 / 2br - Quiet,Beautiful Layout,Lovely Garden,Grass Yard".
Wow! That's a steal of a deal. Now we approached this situation like most people do thinking that this offer, being too good to be true, was posted in one of two kinds of ways. The first, the poster is dumb. Yes, mean words but it is true. Every now and then someone does something ridiculous for their own reasons (or because they have no reason). The second, is the one who is out to get you and in some way take advantage of our greed. This is because it is human to want something for nothing, like the people crowding around the sample booths at Costco. (I'm guilty.)
So, what do we do when a deal like this comes along? Well, we email him of course! We want to know the reasoning behind this fantastic offer. The email we received back was very vague and never addressed the questions we originally emailed the poster about. The email received was this:
Hi and thank you for your interest,My wife, being the smart woman she is, started Google searching the name Madden-Brooks properties. There are no viable results. One result on craigslist.org is now reporting this is a scam. I would agree. The email the sender uses is not from a business but a spoofed email. The email also included a PDF file of a rental application. The file asks for good sell-able data about you including your birthday, full name, email, phone number, previous address, credit score (with a link to www.YesFreeCreditScore.com, a forwarded domain with tracking pixel commonly used to track users on the internet).
My inbox was flooded today with inquiries so I'll do my best to answer some of the questions:
1) Cable, wireless internet, heat, water, and electricity are included in the monthly rental fee.
2) The security deposit amount depends on your credit score.
3) Move-in can begin as early as next month.
4) I haven't gotten around to taking more pictures yet but I will be taking groups of interested parties for showings later this week.
Due to the overwhelming response I've included a preliminary rental application for any interested parties. I only want to converse with people who are serious about actually moving into this property. So if you are interested in a showing and further information, please fill out the attached application and email it to me so that I can get back to you soon.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Steve Madden

Two major red flags for us were the fact that the original posting didn't list an address and that people couldn't see it until they filled out the application.
I am going to fill it out with bogus information and see if I get a reply from the sender using a free junk email address.
My advice to those looking for good deals online is to thoroughly check everything because good deals rarely happen. Please leave your comments if you have more information about this scam. Thanks.

we were scammed by same person. such a shame.abother email being used by him is steve.rentals@aol.com
ReplyDeletei was even given the same reply as you.he gave everything included in rent but didnt answer any of my questions
ReplyDeleteThey have another one: http://provo.craigslist.org/apa/1555640662.html
ReplyDeleteOf course no address provided even though that was what I requested for - thinking this was too good of a deal.
The images are enough to trigger alarms - doesn't even look like the same house!
Thanks for this post, ensured me it was indeed a scam.

ReplyDeleteThis is his newest listing I came accross it this morning and wanted more information. Thank you for posting what you had found out I am flagging his post as we speak.
Thank you. He is now posting in Sacramento, CA. It seemed too good to be true so I googled and found this, so thank you.
ReplyDeleteWhen did he post this? And where is this property that he posted supposedly located? Because I just came across one last night for Albuquerque and it says the exact same thing, and the email that i received was word for word! Only different pictures were attached and a slightly different wording on the ad on craigslist.
ReplyDeletei dont have additional info, but i know hes posted more on craigslist. my suspicion was aroused late and i sent him the applications with real info. a day later i got an email saying it was undeliverable. so if scammed what would u reccommend. thanks for posting btw.
ReplyDeleteI seen this same posting with the same emailed response from the same guy here in Tulsa, OK. And just like your wife I too did some research. However, I googled the credit report website which brought up this page as well as others that marked the craigslist posting as a scam. Thanks for doing so.
ReplyDeleteD-
I just got that same email. I wish people would get a life and stop being so dishonest! These scammers are ruining craigslist for everyone.
ReplyDeleteThe same scam is running on the Spokane, WA Craigslist for a 2BR apartment for only $400. I too Googled Madden-Brooks specifically because no address was given. Found the scam alert postings and your blog. Thanks for the info! Got the email from him/her with the PDF app. What struck me as particularly odd was the link to a free credit report site for the applicant to go get their own credit report. LOL. What an idiot. And yet, people will fall for it, sadly.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the blog. I will continue to look else where. It's sad that some people are always trying to scheme.
ReplyDeleteThanks again.
Rhonda
I emailed about this posting, too, and got the exact same response (not answering any of my real questions). I knew it was fishy so I left it alone. There is a new one out, though, posted just a day or two ago, that I also emailed about, and got the EXACT same response as I did on the first one, from the same guy. Word for word the exact same response. Thank you for posting this because of course google-ing the supposed business was the first thing I decided to do. I'm glad to hear it from you.
ReplyDeleteI got the exact same email response but it was for a totally different property. Your images don't even look like they're for a property in California. This is definitely a scam.
ReplyDelete"Steve" has done it again... http://provo.craigslist.org/ofc/1584282852.html
ReplyDeleteHello, in the past two days I spend the same, with two different properties. The first was 67 Hillcrest Dr. West Seneca NY post for Michael Hope hopem38@yahoo.com, http://buffalocraiglist.org/apa/1584805864.html
ReplyDeleteThe second was posted by Steve Madden/Madden-Brooks Properties with the same application that you showed. Today I got check through networks before sending any information in the application and never found info about this people, just found you. Thanks for letting know and prevent others would fall into this fraud. Very Gratefull...
The property 1025 Chalmers in Buffalo in Craiglist is posted by Steven Madden/Madden-Brooks Properties too.
ReplyDeleteAlso saw the exact same listing in Binghamton, NY although it's for a 3 bdrm apt $500/mo. Same exact reply with rental application. Looked suspicious to me as well, did the same thing your wife did and googled the name Madden-Brooks Properties. Chalk it up to woman's intuition at this point I guess, just glad I didn't fall for it. Identity theft is a growing crime & can take years and years to get your life back once someone has manipulated your trust in this fashion.
ReplyDeletei second this posting...complete scam amongst others, someone needs to monitor Craigslist, or it won't be useful anymore
ReplyDeleteFrom Steve in Portland Oregon:

ReplyDeleteI got the exact same response in Rochester, MN. Thanks for the heads up!
ReplyDeleteI too am from the Rochester, Mn. area and have replied to & gotten the same exact responses on several property listings on Craigslist. Yes its a shame, as i have been trying for months to find a place, then come to have these "too good to be true" listings show up, its very frustrating. The guy is nothing more than a "Bottom Feeder". Thanks for figuring it out.
ReplyDeleteI am in Fresno, CA and fell for this scam also. Luckily, I didn't send back any info, but I was dumb enough to reply to the ad in the first place. Are there any legitimate properties online anymore? We are in dire need of a home and it is disheartening how people try to take advantage of us.
ReplyDeleteJust got the exact same email. This guy and people like him need to be screened somehow. In the state the ecomony is in right now, no one has the money to be losing to people like this!
ReplyDeletegot the exact same email in Louisville, KY.
ReplyDeleteMY DAUGHTER AND I SAW THE SAME THE ONE...I WAS LOOKING AT ONE IN RALEIGH, NC AND MY DAUGHTER WAS LOOKING AT ONE IN NEW JERSEY. SHE CALLED ME TONIGHT BECAUSE SHE WAS TRYING TO EMAIL THE APPL BACK AND SOMETHING TOLD ME TO GOOGLE HIM AND I DID AND I CAME ACROSS THIS BLOG....MY DAUGHTER AND I THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
ReplyDeleteI was looking for a place in San Diego, CA and I got the same email except it came from steve78@macmobilemail.com.

ReplyDeleteI replied to this posting and got the same reply so many of you have quotes. The posting has been flagged and removed from craig's list. What a shame. I am so glad I stumbled upon your blog. Something just didn't seem right about his email reply. He answered questions I didn't even ask.
I was looking for something in Albany, NY and I got a reply identical to the ones above. The posting:
ReplyDelete$250/1 br Going...Going...Almost Gone (Albany)
Please beware, craigslist scammers are nefarious.
wow, thanks for this, I ALMOST emailed the guy back again with the rental application. I thought it had to be a scam since it was a 3 BR for $475 a month and that included everything. then my friend and i decided to google the place to make sure it was real, and sure enough, it was a scam!! thanks!!!!!

Awesome thanks for the info. I figured something was wrong about that add.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I also saw this posting on CL. Being naiive, I believed that maybe if was really a deal (as the post said the property was shared with others), but when I googled the property company, I found this blog :)

I got the same thing...3bdrm house for 550 with all utilities paid, etc. Same email that Pash above got.
ReplyDeleteI knew it was too good to be true! I got so excited when I got this email from him. I started to fill it out but then I noticed he never included an address of the property so I decided to google Madden Brooks and scam alerts popped up. Thanks for saving me, and hopefully others. Now I'm so disappointed about this dream house.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is terrible. I live in Denver, CO and got the same reply as everyone else. Looks like he hits the entire country. Thanks for the heads up!!
ReplyDeleteI just received the same email. Thanks for the warning!!!
ReplyDeleteKaylie, I live in Fort Collins and received the same reply for a 3bdrm . $500 per month. Thanks for the heads up guys!
ReplyDeletehous-sfadt-1620480178@craigslist.org this post is also on craigslist and it is by the same person or entity. The title of the post is $505 / 3br - 3 BD/ 2.5 BATH/ RENOVATED HOUSE (austin). Thank you for the help.
ReplyDeleteThis is going on all over the country on Craigslist. I'm in the Pittsburgh area and see it frequently. If you actually click on the JOBS section, Craigslist posts a warning about scam "employers" telling you to fill out an "online application" for similar too-good-to-be-true jobs (Administrative Assistant, $20 an hour plus benefits...I wish!) and collecting personal information in the same manner. The only minor difference is that in the Housing section the scammers are also collecting commissions on the people who sign up for the "free" credit reports.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure why Craigslist hasn't posted a similar warning on the Housing section...the scam is much more prevalent there.
I actually wrote about the scam postings on my own blog with some tips on how to spot them. http://www.backinpgh.com/?p=73
He's at it again in Austin, TX. My question is this: on the rental application it asks for a credit score and provides a link to a site where you can get your score. Is that website legit??? Should I be worried if I started to fill this out? I did not, however, send him the application.
ReplyDeleteSame scam, same reply for Grand Rapids MI:

ReplyDeleteHe's still at it!
ReplyDeletehttp://raleigh.craigslist.org/apa/1625525534.html
Flagged it already.
I am from Boston, Ma hes using the same scam out here still.
ReplyDeleteHe's targeted Portland, OR, now!
ReplyDeleteMy parents' house was on the market last fall (in PDX) when we suddenly began getting contacted by prospective renters who had seen our house on craigslist as a rental for very, very cheap. There were even outside pictures. Needless to say, after seeing the real estate sign, they contacted our realtor who had to explain that it was a scam... there was no way a house on the market for $600k was renting for $650/mth.
I've seen things like this a lot...
Exact same ad listed in eugene oregon for this fake maden brooks company.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many scams on rentals right now.
Be careful!
I am glad so many people are actually looking this up and finding out it's a scam. Thank you for having this. I typed Madden Brooks into google and this was the first page. We are looking for an apartment in Idaho Falls, Idaho. I don't actually remember which listing it was on Craigslist because we have emailed so many but I'm pretty sure the price was 395 for a 2 bedroom so watch out!!
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot that have weird pictures that obviously don't match that I haven't bothered contacting because you can tell it is too good to be true.
He's posting in Denver as well we just got the reply today, we have noticed that 99% of the rental home ads are not legit. It's a sad sad thing these people trying to take advantage of struggling people in struggling times!!!

I just got an email and I live in Florida that was the same exact email. I asked for the address initially and I get an email of what it includes and no pictures yet. When I tried to reply and let the bozo know you dont request an application just in case I am not interested in the location and my email came back because the email is not valid.
ReplyDeleteThis "guy" (or more likely a ring of thugs) scams people all over the internet. Here are pages about the very same, on ripoff report:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/366/RipOff0366927.htm
http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/406/RipOff0406567.htm
http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/deal-discussion/922298
I found him via Boston Craigslist. He sent me the same bogus "application" from the spoofed address ( steve.rentals.@aol.com ) but also in the full headers of the email was the address steve78@macmobilemail.com .
If you google that "macmobilemail" address, you will find hundreds of hits reporting this guy's (or more likely, this group of thugs) scams.
MacMobileMail.com is not any official domain of the real Mac (they used to use Mac.com and now they use Me.com).
So I started looking for info on this macmobilemail.com and it was very hard to figure out who owns it--which is a pretty good indicator that it is "Steve's" own domain from which he perpetrates scams.
I was able to get the IP address for the domain. Then I was able to find an approximate address (no name or suite number): 11205 Bellaire Blvd Houston, TX 77072.
I Google-mapped that address, and found a large hosting company located there: http://www.resellerzoom.com (a division of hosting zoom).
My best guess is that "Steve" owns multiple domains through ResellerZoom, and that he uses the domains to perpetrate lots of scams.
I called ResellerZoom to ask about their policy if someone is using their services to commit a crime. They encouraged me to report the full details to them at abuse@hostingzoom.com.
So, folks, if you're reading this and have run into "Steve" or anyone from "macmobilemail.com" online, send your experience to abuse@hostingzoom.com.
Chasing these parasites down at the root (the host) and cutting them off there isn't going to stop all the scamming, but it's the only way to slow them down or, from time to time, even prosecute some of them.
I just saw the guy advertising yesterday - same deal, same e mail response. One of the photos on the listing looked like it was straight lifted from a catalog - complete with watermark LOL.
ReplyDeleteI also googled his alleged real estate company and that's how I found you. Glad to know it's a scam, I will be reporting it. Thanks!
I smelt a rat the moment I saw that this person is asking for a rental application (with all your personal details on it) before even showing you the property.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I googled "Madden-brooks properties" and ended up on this page, confirming it's a scam.
Thanks!
He advertised his place 2/1 place in Texarkana, AR on CRAIGSLIST and he replied after i emailed him about how much his deposit was and where it was LOCATED. And was charging $385.00 a month.
ReplyDeletehe did NOT say where it was located and stated my deposit would depend on my credit score. So, I googled his business and came across this. So, this is definitely a scam.

Hi Everyone,
ReplyDeleteI also received the same email for the post of : $500 / 2br - 2Bdrm Apt w/ Balcony and Private Parking - (rochester,NY). I was pretty sure it was to good to be true so i went right to google also. Hope this helps.
I was looking for apartments/houses for rent on craiglist and came across this ad that seemed to good to be true. It was titled, "$575 3/2/1 house for rent with the address". I then saw another ad for the same price, except it was a 2Bdrm and on the other side of town. I googled maped both the addresses, a good habiat of my fiances and they were listed in the ad. Obviously was a familar address since it gave me directions. No worries. Went by the house that was a 2Bdrm and saw a sign out on the yard, so there was no worries about it being if-ie. My fiance and I then drove to the 3Bdrm, not knowing it was a scam. Although, the house was occupied it didn't occur to us that it was fraud since the ad mentioned it would be available the second week of April (2010.) What then made me think, was there was no number on the ad when I checked once again when we got home. I then sent an email and got the same reply others have recieved as well as you and your wife. I had a laugh when I read the name, Steve Madden since he is a famous designer lol. Then saw the Madden-Brooks Properties and googled the name. I then came across you and your blog. It just scares me to know that the person behind this scam actually used someones' real address. Is it possible for me to report the incident? Alert the residents who are living in the house that there was an ad with their address? There has been many stories about the site itself (Craiglist) so please do your research; all you out there. Always, better safe than sorry. God bless you and your wife for posting this blog and alerting others.
ReplyDeleteI got pretty much the same e-mail as everyone else. He didn't answer my questions, but gave me his own little list of things that are too good to be true.
ReplyDeleteHe's at it in Mpls, MN now too. What (if any) are the legal actions that can be taken against someone like this, being so "stupid" and all. I mean, it can't be that hard to prosecute whoever this is. They are a waste of space on the web!
ReplyDeleteOMG...I am so glad that I didn't provide any of my info. to this scammer. I'm in Atlanta and this is the post he sent me:

ReplyDeleteYou saved me from a possible identity theft. Thanks. He's in Provo, UT too. Being a poor student sucks and this guy is making it worse wasting my time and possibly causing many more problems down the line for anyone who is suckered into his scheme. What a jerk.

Thank God I found this just before I sent my info to them. I was really astounded at the price of the condos they were referring to. I did actually got my credit report so I hope no info was stolen during the process.
ReplyDelete"Lauren Holley" is very active in Chicago and replied to my inquiry for a "$715 exquisite furnished apartment - north chicagoland". The email did not answer any of my questions (ex - the specific location). This was the reply:

Forwards to:

which WOT warns has a poor reputation.
I got the same exact email from Lauren Holley -- so they are an actress now instead of "Steve Madden" the shoe guy. THANK YOU FOR YOUR BLOG POST and for everyone who posted comments about "Lauren Holley". I Googled her email domain, 2tanproperties.com, and this post came up, so this provided me with much needed information to avoid the scam. I hope others will do the same. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAnh, the credit report site will charge you $29.95 a month for "credit monitoring." That is at the least - if they don't steal the cc number and info outright. If you signed up for the credit report and entered a credit card number in the credit report site, keep your eye on that card - or cancel it right away!
ReplyDeleteI receive same email here is the quote for 2 bed luxury condo $690

I'm hoping that people are smart enough to google these fraudulent fools before they send them any personal info! I am so glad I did not!
THIS IS WHAT I FOUND ON CRAIGSLIST YESTERDAY.http://nashville.craigslist.org/apa/1829292674.html. I SENT AN EMAIL REQUESTING THE LOCATION OF THE HOUSE AND GOT THE SAME EMAIL THAT EVERYONE ELSE GOT FROM "Steve" . GLAD I FOUND THIS BLOG BEFORE I FILLED OUT THE APPLICATION THAT WAS INCLUDED IN THE EMAIL.
ReplyDeleteforgot to mention it was posted as a nashville, tn listing
ReplyDeleteI came across the same ad for a 3 bedroom Condo in Bakersfield, CA for $850.00 This guy is absolutely relentless! Something really should be done about this, imagine all the others who don't take the time to "google" these scam artists and end up suffering from identity theft! It's absolutely ridiculous..
ReplyDeleteGot the same email from Steve Madden for a rental in Morgantown, WV.
ReplyDelete"Mary" just posted another scam in New York on Craigslist. Here's the email I received after I wrote in response to the the posting (sounding too good to be true):

just got the same email about a rental in new orleans
ReplyDeleteI would like to add a note regarding this Mary Smith at GW Property Management.
ReplyDeleteSimilar email to the posted above, please see below. She sent me the email about 2 weeks after I had contacted the house rental link on Craigs List. What didn't add up in my mind was the Security Deposit tied in to your Credit Score! Why would they even look at your score for renting is beyond me...
Anyway, RENTERS, PLEASE BEWARE!!!

I have also received the same post, for a listing in the Orange circle, in Orange, California.
ReplyDeleteI got the same Email... i thought it was strange but i tried to email back because he didnt answer any of my questions but the email wouldnt go through...
ReplyDeleteThis is truly ri-effin-diculous! I start a new job in less than 2 weeks now, and I've been scouring the 'Net for a new place since early-July. Being that I don't drive, I've been going to Charleston on the bus every other weekend, trying to narrow down a place because I know some of the places are not going to be found in the paper or online.
ReplyDeleteSo guess what: last nite I spotted the most PERfect ad:
$365 / 1br - 1BR/1BA Apartment AVAILABLE NOW in Summers Street (Summers Street/// Charleston, WV)
I emailed the poster and I just got the exact same email response from Steve Madden @ Madden Brooks Properties..I won't repost it...needless to say, it is word-for-word the exact same thing. I will say that the "too good to be true" apartment this time was listed in Charleston WV.
www.charlestonwv.craigslist.org/apa/1877139975.html
Of course, my first thought was "geez..and it's only a couple of walking blocks from my new job! SCORE!" But when I got to the bottom of the email and saw (of all names) Steve Madden, I saw red..yeah, as in red flags! Typed in Madden-Brooks Properties in google, and oh my. Let's just say I'm SO glad I know better than to take things at face value & searched the SOBs first..
I think there's another one on there now that was posted at 1:17pm (hmm..6 mins before I got that fake@$ email; I'm thinking if you see /// in the title, then it's going to be the same @$$hole.)
$350 / 1br - GREAT MOVE-IN SPECIALS 1BR/1BA Apt. in Lee Street East (Lee Street East///// Charleston, WV)
www.charlestonwv.craigslist.org/apa/1878541859.html
Yeah, I've marked them both, but they're still there, and what are we supposed to do: go thru alll of craigslist & flag them as spam..good luck peeps. And as another poster commented: if it sounds too good to be true...RUN..it probably is.
I am so sick & tired of these scammers! It is hard enough just to look through posts and ads for rentals, not to mention time consuming! There has got to be a way to stop these people!
ReplyDeleteJust went through the same thing. Different name on the reply e-mail, but also word for word. The name was "Mary Smith". That was enough to make me wonder...kinda like saying my name is "John Doe". I'm sure there are plenty Mary Smiths out there, but it did seem odd. Thanks for all the posts here!
ReplyDeleteSeriously thank God I saw this, I just got the email from him, I was so excited about this apartment that was an amazing deal. I was about to fill out that application for the apartment, and then my boyfriend said this just sounded too sketchy...and he was exactly right! thank you so much for this page!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI was interested in a listing too:
ReplyDeletehttp://binghamton.craigslist.org/apa/1877214036.html
I googled Madden-Brooks Properties and came across this Blog... thanks... but this is the email that was sent to me:
